THE UNAIDS has given it support to work with PNG to address violence against women and issues associated with violence.

Director of the regional support team Asia and the Pacific Steven Kraus said the UN would be assisting countries in the Pacific regarding safety of women.

He was addressing the community and members  of Safe City Safe Woman Association at the Gordon Market yesterday in Port Moresby.

Kraus said both men and women should work together for peace and make the community a better place to live in.

“Violence is never a manly thing and is never right,” Kraus said.

He said the team would be visiting other parts of PNG to give their assistance and support to minimise violence, crime and HIV/AIDS.

Senior adviser from the UNAIDS Marie Engel said violence against women also resulted in the increase in HIV epidemic, 95% of the HIV cases were from the Pacific region.

She acknowledged mothers from the association who helped the police and NCD to minimise violence against women and stop crimes.
