PUBLIC servants have been reminded to understand the civil service general orders to guide them in their work.

Personnel Management Department secretary John Kali said provincial administrators, department heads and managers should ensure that all public servants understand the general orders well.

Kali was surprised that only one of the 28 public servants he recently addressed in Madang was familiar with the general orders. The others told him that they had never seen, let alone read it.

Kali was disappointed because the group had joined the civil service two years ago but never read the orders.

“Almost 60% of them have worked for more than three years but have never read the orders,” he said.

He however said it was not their fault because it should have been part of their induction course conducted by human resource officers.

He said government agencies should implement induction courses for new employees.

“They must learn the general orders and stick to it,” he said.

The department has called on public servants to be focused on achieving the medium and long-term developmental plans, including Vision 2050.

Kali said a lot of criticisms have been levelled at the public servants because of poor service delivery.

He urged government workers to take time to understand the general orders and improve their productivity.
