Unfounded claims against Parkop

Letters, Normal

I REFER to your report “Voters reconcile with Vele” (Oct 4).
The people of Moresby Northeast electorate organised a well-planned political gathering at the Unagi oval last Saturday to create unfounded and meaningless accusations and criticisms on the incumbent NCD governor.
I regret to read the comments made by selfish, self-centred and blind citizens of Port Moresby, namely the comments by Maria Andrews and Pex Kuman.
I quote the comments by Andrews “… there is no point decorating and beautifying the streets, roads, parks and buildings if the needs of the people are not properly addressed”.
Does she not see the physical developments which NCD Governor Powes Parkop has done over in three years?
Whose interests is she representing?
What are the needs of the people which Parkop and his administration failed to provide?
When Wari Vele was the governor, what tangible developments did he bring?
Was the 1.5km road stretching from NCDC office to Waigani market traffic light, costing more than K30 million justifiable and necessary?
If Andrews and Kuman failed to see what Parkop has done for the people of PNG in Port Moresby, I will highlight some of the developments which have been completed and still in progress:
* Streets with lights and flower beds;
* Beautiful roundabouts;
* Upgrading roads and sealing potholes in many of our streets (just drive around and see for yourself);
* Children’s playing facilities;
* New and renovated markets in the city’s suburbs;
* Recreational parks;
* Sponsoring students at technical colleges in Port Moresby;
* Bus stop shelters (a minor thing but nobody has done that); and
* NCD High School (plans under way, The National, Oct 4).
These are just some of the projects Parkop has delivered or work still in progress.
I am a Western Highlander living and working in Port Moresby.
As long as I see a leader who is transparent and deliver the goods and services to the people, I have no choice and will not hesitate to vote for that person.
Parkop has done well in the three short years in office and I commend him for that.
I believe the governor should not feel threatened as I am confident the majority of the people of NCD can see for themselves what he has done.
Many of the comments made at the gathering were unfounded and unsubstantiated.
They were more rhetoric, self-centred and do not serve the majority.
To those who are thinking of contesting the NCD governor’s seat in 2012, be prepared to build a strong platform where you can stand.
