Unhelpful police

Letters

I WOULD like to air my views on what happened on Wednesday, June 13, regarding who and where do we go for help where there is domestic violence.
My daughter was bashed up by her husband and he would not let her out of the house. He threatened her that if she got out of the house, he would kill her and get their 21-month-old baby away from her.
In fear, she sent me a text message telling me what her husband had told her.
It bothered me so much that around 2.30pm I got on a PMV and went to Waigani police station to seek help as my daughter lives with her husband and his mother at Waigani Games Village-Police Barracks. His mother is an employee of the Police Department.
Upon explaining to the duty officer at the counter my reason for being there, he advised that I was not eligible to file a report and be issued a OB number as the courts do not accept evidence and/or information received from another person other than the victim herself.
I asked the duty officer how he expected the victim to file a report when she is being locked up in the house by her husband?
The duty officer kept telling me to get the numbers (3244331/3244318/3244329) on the wall posters for the FSVU at Boroko Police Station and call them for assistance.
I informed him that I had been calling the numbers all day but no one answered.
All I wanted was for the police to escort me to the house to get my daughter and her baby out to safety. My daughter, being the victim, can then lodge her complaint herself.
He then went on to tell me that Waigani Police Station only had one vehicle and it was out so I had to wait.
After waiting for some time and fearing for my daughter and grandchild’s safety, I got on another PMV and went straight to Boroko Police Station.
I informed the duty officer at the counter why I was there and that I had been to Waigani Police Station but because I was a third party they were not able to register my complaint and they also had no vehicle available to assist me.
This duty officer at Boroko Police Station then told me that I was not being told the truth.
He said that as an informant, Waigani police should have registered my complaint and issued an OB number.
Games village is under Waigani Police Station so they have to assist.
I insisted that I was worried about my daughter and her child’s safety and needed assistance from police to escort me to the house and get both of them out.
He said that they only had one vehicle and it was dropping off and picking up staff.
I walked out of the police station helpless.
Can the Police hierarchy tell us exactly the roles of the various police stations are? When we need help and go to the police, we are given the runaround.
What if in the midst of being given the runaround and being advised that there is no vehicle – or the area is not within their operational area – and the victim is killed?
What happens to us? Can FSVU or police operations tell us what is happening to the hotline numbers 324431/3244318/3244329? No one picks up the phone when it rings.
