Uni refers students to police over fraud

THE University of Goroka has referred 54 students to the police for fraud-related offences since last year and has found new ones after the close of registrations this year.
The amount involved is K254,000.
Vice-Chancellor Musawe Sinebare yesterday announced that those (including staff) found to be in breach of University of Goroka rules and regulations would face the disciplinary committee.
Last week, students brought to management a list of petitions.
One of them was the issue of staff involvement in fraud and bribery, which was rife during registration.
The petition said among other things, the so-called “supplementary lists” should and must be stopped as they were riddled with fraud and bribery and that a students’ representative council (SRC) be reinstated.
The management is aware of the fraud committed by staff and we have one evidence to point to staff and now students are being urged to come forward with hard evidence to name and shame those staff involved.
Sinebare said: “The SRC will be reinstated once the final amendments to the SRC constitution are completed and approved by the University Council.”
Meanwhile, other new fraud detected have been the “selling” of acceptance or offer letters by continuing students to new applicants.
Sinebare said this was something new, someone had sold the letter for K2500.
“This is despicable and anyone found to be doing this will be in serious trouble,” he said.
“This is one case reported but there are many doing this.”
