THE PNG Trade Union Congress has described recent political events as a calculated move by the government to win public support over a cabinet blunder.
Commenting on the voluntary appearance before the police by two senior state ministers, general-secretary John Paska said it was the most “pathetic and pitiful behaviour and a comical and stupid move”.
“It is clear they reasoned that the most honorable thing for them to do was to front up at the police station and give themselves in,” he said. “In doing so, they would win praise for what they considered to be a valiant act of leadership.”
Paska said the expression of solidarity by their political colleagues who provided escort for them was even more astounding.
“They remind us of marauding juveniles in school yards who tear up the rules and then voluntarily parade seeking solace and veneration,” he said.
“They tear up the national constitution, ransack and betray the hard-won trust and confidence at the international level and then have the gall to seek redemption through the silliness of their appearance before the Boroko police station. How cheap can one get?”
