Archbishop of Port Moresby Cardinal Sir John Ribat and Minister for Information Communication and Technology Sam Basil agree that the church and government ought to work together to fight crimes related to sorcery.
They both alluded to this during a meeting in Port Moresby yesterday.
Sir John said that sorcery was a cultural mindset that was misunderstood in the modern setting.
“Addressing sorcery is certainly the work of both the government and the churches, including the communities,” he said.
“The community and people are suffering because of this suspicion.
“People are dying unnecessarily.
“We have to work together to minimise its negative impacts on society so we are able to live peacefully and without fear.”
Basil said the increase in sorcery-related crimes was a cause of great concern and solutions had to be found.
“That is why we should be partnering with the church more on this matter,” he said.
“I stand with the prime minister on the call that the Government needs the church to work with us on this.”
Basil said he would support legislation to address increases in sorcery-related crimes.
