Unitech needs equipment

Letters

WITH so much change happening around the world and in Papua New Guinea, technological and research institutions are normally the ones to lead the nation with the production of upcoming elites who are equipped with good knowledge and understanding.
To produce these elites, the University of Technology in Lae needs equipment (most of which are currently outdated), legitimate professionals who want to pass on their knowledge to the upcoming generation, and a peaceful environment free of threats and oppression for the students to gain what it required of them.
However, this is limited due to the management of the university oppressing the public, the students and the staff with their so-called rules using their agent – UniForce – who do not understand how to do their job: Security of university property which includes houses, equipment, staffs and students.
After the Students’ Representative Council was disbanded in 2016, student rights were stripped in 2018.
We don’t know if the students are students or inmates in jail.
It is wrong for students to exit and enter the campus without UniForce threatening them about IDs and facing the Unitech Student Disciplinary Committee (USDC) and the possibility of three-year suspension.
Non-residential students who live with their friends in their dorms are not allowed to enter the campus late and are threatened with suspension.
Unitech is a State university, meaning it is owned by the public, not individuals in the management who want to control the institution.
Almost 99.9 per cent of students in the university are way over 18 and they are to be regarded as adults.
However, the management sees it differently, saying it is wrong for studentfolks (ladies and gentlemen) to date and enjoy each other’s company in the campus without being threatened of suspension or termination by the management’s socalled agent called UniForce.
A male and female just holding hands and walking around the campus in broad daylight is a crime.
It is wrong for students to sit around the field or any shady areas within the campus during the day without UniForce ganging up on them and insulting and threatening them.
The dorm areas are all fenced in like prison cells, and students do not have any right to talk about it.
May nature find its way to create balance as it always does.
