Unitech students after bed spaces

Lae News, Normal

LESS than 50 students of the more than 1,500 boarding students on HECAS scholarship at the University of Technology are looking for bed spaces.
University officials at the main campus at Taraka, Lae, said last night they were working at solving the situation.
One of the solutions Unitech was lookinginto was in students bunking up at three to a room instead of the normal two.
The officials said the situation was not a problem with female students.
The male students were however finding it hard to cope with bunking.
Students who agreed to sharing three-to-a-room would have to sign an agreement.
“We had no problems with that last year,” a staff member said.
This year the situation had again cropped up but the university will put students up at the Assemblies of God Okari campus, more than 6km away, on Buimo Road.
The Okari Campus has 205 rooms allocated for Unitech use. Self-sponsored students who pay the full fees are eligible to rooms there.
The St Augustine parish also has 25 rooms, but these are only for male Catholic students.
“As it has been stated, Unitech does not have enough rooms to accommodate all its students, whose numbers continue to grow every year.
“In fact, because of this, the university decided to reduce the new intakes by 15% this year,”
