Unitech to resume classes this week
The National, Monday March 31st, 2014
CLASSES at the University of Technology will resume this week with the arrival of Vice-Chancellor Dr Albert Schram.
It follows the appointment by Higher Education Minister Delilah Gore of a new university council to be headed by Sir Nagora Bogan.
The Sevua Report on Unitech was given to the council to implement its recommendations. Students had been boycotting classes with the support of three staff unions.
Minister for Justice and Attorney-General Kerenga Kua and Gore made the announcement to the students last Friday.
This came despite a National Court declaration last Wednesday that interim university council headed by Sir Nagora was null and void.
It reinstated the council led by Phillip Stagg with Ralph Saulep as acting chancellor. It ordered a meeting of a council with eight nominees by the government within three working days.
Gore under her ministerial powers appointed eight council members and flew to Lae with Kua and Police Minister Robert Atiyafa.
The council’s first business was the appointment of Schram.
The barricade at the main entrance and the administration building will be removed on the arrival of Schram who has been notified of the new council appointment and his reinstatement.
