United approach leads to arrest of murder suspects

A COORDINATED approach involving community leaders and police led to the arrest of three murder suspects at Vada Vada settlement in Port Moresby on Wednesday, police say.
NCD Central Commander Asst Comm of Police (ACP) Anthony Wagambie Jnr said the arrest of the suspects had defused tensions between two warring factions.
He thanked Moresby South administrator Aisop Mol and community leaders who persuaded the Goilala community to round up the three suspects involved in the killing of a man.
ACP Wagambie thanked members of the police Fox 100 unit and members of Badili and Boroko police stations for their efforts in restoring peace and good order at Vada Vada settlement.
He said they worked well with the community leaders to end the fighting between the people from Goilala, in Central, and Enga which culminated last Saturday, after some men from Goilala allegedly slashed a security guard with bush knives.
The wounded man was taken to the hospital but passed away 48 hours later, intensifying tensions between the two factions.
ACP Wagambie said when news of the victims passing reached the settlement, the fighting flared up again, but community leaders and the police intervened and quelled the skirmishes.
He said members of the constabulary would continue to maintain a presence in the settlement in a bid to prevent further bloodshed.
ACP Wagambie thanked the community leaders and assured them that police would investigate the killing and bring the murderers to justice.
