The International Food Corporation (IFC) has presented K100,000 to Besta PNG United FC to continue its support of junior football development in the country.
United kick off their campaign when the National Soccer League season begins on Jan 26.
IFC had been supporting the development team for the last 12 years.
IFC chief operating officer Ahmad Faisal Hamdam said Besta was a household brand in the country.
“So we want to share it with people to show that we’re providing healthy food to Papua New Guineans,” Hamdam said.
“It’s made by PNG people.
“This is part of giving back to community.
“This programme is healthy, which is why we budget for it every year.”
Senior sales and marketing manager Roslan Abd Wahed said IFC was supporting the team to participate in the semi-professional competition so that they could push for selection in the national team.
“We are developing them to make the national team,” Wahed said.
Papua New Guinea Football Association education centre director Edris Kumbruwah thanked the company for continuing its support of the national soccer body through the team and the Besta Cup.
He said the sponsorship would cover registration, uniforms, logistics and player support.
“We have to send the players back and forth and make sure they attend school,” Kumbruwah said.
“It’s an academic programme.
“We want them to play quality football and attend school. So there should be life after soccer.”
Meanwhile, a 26-man squad will move to the centre today.
