Universities are independent bodies

Letters

THE good Minister for Higher Education Research Science and Technology (DHERST) Pila Niningi and Government as a whole must know that the four Government-owned universities in the country are peculiar and do not share the same traits of their sister statutory bodies.
Universities are body of knowledge, made up of think thanks, academics and intellectuals.
People who are appointed to be vice-chancellor, pro vice-chancellor and the councils are academics.
They are researchers, highly-qualified and respected in this field and not businessmen or women.
The academics do not share the views of the Government.
Universities are independent and neutral bodies.
They do not come from the chamber of commerce or any other business entities for that matter.
Not only that, the nominated candidates should have been brought to the cabinet for discussion.
I am now calling the prime minister to sack him and appoint a competent person to minister of DHERST.
