ROUND one of the Port Moresby Soccer Association competition kicked off on Saturday with participating teams and supporters frequenting the Bisini Soccer Grounds to catch some football action over the long weekend.
Yesterday saw a double-header in the men’s premier league division with University registering a 1-0 win over newly promoted Seeadler.
University were all guns blazing on game day using their speed and an impressive show of control in their passes from the midfield with the likes of the PNG international Felix Komolong controlling their attack.
The winner was from a first-half penalty.
The main match of the afternoon saw defending champions Mungkas draw 2-2 with the Rigo Coast’s Keleiruna.
Keleiruna opened the scoring in the first half with lofty striker Karo Ila slicing through the Mungkas backline to find the net. A composed Mungkas side were quick to respond with goals from forward Moses Ansib and captian Abel Redenut to give the defending champions a 2-1 at halftime.
Drama ensued in the dying minutes of the second half with the Mungkas adjudged to have handled the ball near their own goal.
This allowed Keleiruna to score the equaliser.
PMSA competitions manager and acting general secretary Paul Karambi said despite a slow start to the matches, he was pleased with the turnout for the men’s premier division yesterday.
Karambi said poor player fitness was obvious throughout the opening round.
“We are slowly picking up, people turned up in numbers and we continued the competition,” Karambi said.
“At the end of the day, one team win and the other lose.
“I hope this weekend showed the teams where they are in terms of their fitness.”
