A LANDOWNER company in New Ireland has approached the University of Natural Resources and Environment to seek assistance in vegetable farming.

Namatanai Vegetable Limited managing director Simon Tagor told the university’s students that because of the high demand in vegetables and fruit supply to mining sites such as NewCrest Mining in Lihir, the company was making arrangements with local farmers to produce quality vegetables and fruit to meet the demand.

He said that would assist the company in minimising its costs to order from overseas.

He said the company decided to approach the university for assistance in the production of the quality vegetables and fruits.

The vegetables they need are corn, round cabbage, lettuce, capsicum, tomatoes, cucumber, spring onion, pineapple, beans, and watermelon and eggplants.

Tagor thanked the acting Dean and Head of Agriculture Department, Peter Navus, for arranging the meeting with students.

Navus told the company representatives that the university had no problem in organising students to start vegetable projects.

He thanked the company for involving the university as one of its partners.

Student Dange Barziring said: “This venture is a great opportunity for us students to market our produce. In addition, I should say that has boosted our moral in working on our plots as we now have a demand to meet.”
