THE University of Natural Resources and Environment has shown great commitment in the fight against cocoa pod borer pest as it continues to educate farmers in the province.
Head of the facilitating team on integrated agricultural training programme, Peter Navus, said the university was keen on facilitating the programme and working together with stakeholders in the roll-out programme.
He said the programme was progressing well in the province.
“ENB provincial government is showing that it can work well at the grassroots level by involving the university in facilitating this vital programme for our farmers,” Navus said.
He said the pest was spreading like cancer and it required everyone to unite and work together stop its spread.
While thanking farmers last week for their week-long commitment which saw them graduating with certificates, he urged them to share their knowledge with members of their community.
He said the danger of not sharing such vital information and knowledge with their community would lead to more problems.
He said the provincial government targeted 432 farmers to be educated through this programme but 476 farmers had graduated with adequate knowledge.
He said this had shown that farmers had great interest in fighting the pest.
He said the number of farmers to undergo this programme “will increase to 631 after farmers in the remaining five LLGs in the province are trained under the roll-out programme”.
