THE University of Goroka (UOG) aims to ensure every teacher has a first degree in teaching and promoting quality education in the country, an official says.
UOG highlands open campus director Hugo Kop made the remarks recently at the closing of a four-week Lahara class conducted by the university to train primary school teachers in the region.
Kop told the teachers from Western Highlands, Jiwaka, Enga and Southern Highlands to be committed.
“This university is looking at helping all teachers throughout the country and for these 23 teachers who are here today to close the lahara programmes, you have been very fortunate to increase your knowledge.
“I want to see more teachers come and be enrolled and take on the degree programmes because that is very helpful,” Kop said.
He said teachers were key people that educated the nation and they should be receiving the best before taking up classes. “It should be better for every teacher to have a first degree to teach and UOG is working around to help.”
Western Highland education executive manager Nox Kiap commended Kop and the University of Goroka staff at the highlands office in Mt Hagen for coming up with the programmes to help teachers.
Kiap said the Education Department would make changes and teachers should upgrade their knowledge with a first degree.
“This is important for you to go back to school,” Kiap said.
