The core of the team is made up of players, who competed at the Australian University Games in Melbourne last year, with a blend of new blood.
Williams said the team had been training for almost two months and he was confident of the player’s condition and their determination to compete against stronger teams from Australian universities.
They will be competing against the University of Western Australia, Sydney University and Melbourne University.
In farewelling the team, vice-chancellor Professor Ross Hynes had these encouraging words to say: “Run like the wind, play smart, play tough, but enjoy your games.”
He also reminded the students they had an ambassadorial role to play on behalf of UPNG and PNG as a whole.
“Walk tall and be proud,” he added.
Williams thanked the companies and individuals for having confidence in the team through their support in various forms.
He made a special mention of Air Niugini, the National Gaming and Control Board, Telikom (PNG) Limited, the Mineral Resources Authority and the University of Papua New Guinea.
