Urgent need for new high school in district
The National, Wednesday March 2nd, 2016
KAINANTU needs another secondary school to serve the population of Agarabi local level government.
Currently, Kainantu Secondary School is facing problems of overcrowding and shortage of teaching staff.
Students have been attending classes on shift basis last year and are expected to continue this year.
We are talking about teacher to student ratio beyond 70 students to a teacher.
The academic potential of students can be fully realised when the teacher to student ratio is as minimal as possible so monitoring and mentoring is achievable.
Such an environment does not exist at Kainantu Secondary at present.
These are not the only continuing students from the primary schools selected to secondary school but repeating children and grownups who want to complete the secondary education under the current Tuition Fee Free (TFF) Policy.
What other statistics are there for the district to put in place a plan for another secondary school?
No one can think that the current situation is normal when the existing concerns continue to persist.
It is important that the provincial education authorities consdier our students’ dilemma and make plans to build a new high school.
There must be a political will to plan for another secondary school in Kainantu.
