US riskier than PNG

Letters

I AM disappointed with the US bureau of consular affairs that appeared in The National yesterday (Dec 8 )
While we appreciate the message from US bureau warning its citizens to reconsider travelling to PNG, because of crime, civil unrest, health concerns, natural disasters and kidnapping, it must report the facts and not assumptions.
The bureau further stressed the high risk of contracting the Coronavirus (Covid-19) because of its poor health mechanisms and poor health facilities.
May I counter argue that despite PNG being a developing country with poor health facilities, isn’t PNG better off than the US compared to their high death rates recorded per day?
The US, despite being well off with better health facilities, have recorded a high number of Covid-19 and Delta variant cases, high Covid-19 and Delta variant related deaths and it is also reported that more than 20 states in the US has Omicron.
The US should be an even riskier country to visit and live in as one is not guaranteed a complete chance of safety given the statistics compared to PNG.
Furthermore, the good bureau of consular affairs forgets that PNG is not like Haiti where Haitian gangs kidnapped 20 US missionary citizens in October and demanded a ransom of US$1 million (about K3.5 million) per person.
The good bureau of consular affairs must get its facts correct before trying to demean a country that cannot and should not be compare to the US.
