Using demonic powers to kill

Pastor Peter Aglum believes sorcery is a spiritual matter and therefore requires the church to lead at the front in breaking its grip on societies.

On March 20 this year, we published the first part of an article based on the views of Pastor Peter Aglum on sorecry. This second part of the article looks at impact of sorcery-related violence.

THERE are many stories with concrete evidence of sorcery practices. Wherever you go in PNG, there is always a story of sorcery.
However, people cannot speak out because of repercussion against their lives.

When a person is suspected of practicing sorcery or witchcraft, the community plots and murders the accused. Even though there is no evidence to prove the allegations, they take away the life of the person through extremely violent means. The means of taking away the life of the accused are very barbaric, brutal and ferocious. Those who survive the ordeal live with nightmares all through their lives.
Murder is killing someone deliberately and is against the law of the land and law of God. Unnecessary killings related to sorcery are rife in the country and that is a cause for concern.

When one is accused of practicing sorcery and is exposed to the public, his or her entire family members are humiliated. They live in shame and most times they do not take part in communal activities. They isolate themselves from public exposure believing that people will gossip about them. This fear is passed on from generation to generation.

The accused people are always discriminated and treated unfairly in the communities.
They are treated as rejected people or very low class people with no dignity and standing in the community. Sometimes their basic rights are denied because they carry with them the name tag of sorcerer or sorceress.

Tribal fights
In PNG society, we live in tribal groups and our lives are interdependent because we need each other for survival. Our family links and ties are very strong and deeply rooted. When you touch a person, you touch the entire family, clan or tribe.
When a person is suspected of sorcery or witchcraft and is accused or pain is inflicted upon them, the family members are most likely to retaliate. This eventually leads to tribal fights in the community.
Tribal fights then lead to total destruction of properties and loss of lives.

Many of these killings involve women, some of whom die leaving behind their children as orphans. It is very hard to look after such children in a society because of the name tag the community already placed upon them. Therefore, many of these children are left to look after themselves with minimal chances of education which affects their future.
Sorcery-related issues have caused a lot of stress in the lives of people. A lot of people are displaced, exiled, wandering from place to place in fear of their lives. People who fear sorcery and witches and people who are alleged to practice sorcery and witchcraft both move and live in fear.

Sorcery in biblical context
The Bible mentions the words sorcery six times, sorcerer four times and witchcraft six times. If the Bible mentions them then they do exist and their existence cannot be denied.
The Bible says that Satan and his angels were cast down to earth – Rev 12:9 says, “So the great dragon was cast out, that serpent of old, called the devil and satan, who deceives the whole world; he was cast to the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.”
They are evil spirits with no flesh and blood. “For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.”-Eph 6:12
Because they are spirits, they live in hosts and human beings and animals are very good hosts for demonic spirits to abide (Mat 8:30-32). Human bodies are also the temple of the Holy Spirit of God (1Cor 3:16).
To prove that they live in a person, they use the host to talk and perform magical and supernatural acts. So the demons begged Him, saying, “If You cast us out, permit us to go away into the herd of swine.” -Mt 8:31.
Mt 16:22 – Then Peter took Him aside and began to rebuke Him, saying, “Far be it from You, Lord; this shall not happen to You!” But He turned and said to Peter, “Get behind Me, Satan! You are an offense to Me, for you are not mindful of the things of God, but the things of men.”
2Pe 2:16 -But he was rebuked for his iniquity: a dumb donkey speaking with a man’s voice restrained the madness of the prophet.

Part of Jesus Christ’s work while on earth was casting out demons in people and delivering them. The Bible has many records of this deliverance ministry.
Mt 8:16 -And when even was come, they brought unto him many possessed with demons: and he cast out the spirits with a word, and healed all that were sick.
Mt 9:33 – And when the demon was cast out, the dumb man spake: and the multitudes marvelled, saying, it was never so seen in Israel.
Mt 12:24 – But when the Pharisees heard it, they said, this man doth not cast out demons, but by Beelzebub the prince of the demons.
God gave power to Jesus Christ to cast out the demons (Mat 28:18) and Jesus transferred that power to His apostles to carry on from where He left. That power and authority of God is still operating in the church and God is urging the church to use it (1Ti 4:14). Do not neglect the power that is in you, which was given to you by prophecy with the laying on of the hands of the eldership.
2Tim 1:6 – Therefore I remind you to stir up the power of God which is in you through the laying on of my hands.7 For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.
The churches of God have the power of God vested in them to cast out the demon spirits operating in the vessels;
Mk 3:15 – And to have authority to cast out demons:
Mk 16:17 – And these signs shall accompany them that believe: in my name shall they cast out demons;
Mt 10:8 – Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse the lepers, cast out demons: freely ye received, freely give.
Did the Bible make mention of any penalties for the sorcerers and witches?
In the Old Testament, God gave specific instructions to kill those who practice sorcery and witchcraft.
Le 20:27 – A man or a woman who is a medium, or who has familiar spirits, shall surely be put to death; they shall stone them with stones. Their blood shall be upon them.
Ex 22:18 – You shall not permit a sorceress to live.
If there was such a law in the Bible, that means sorcerers and witches do exist.
Is this law still applicable in the New Testament and during our generation and age?
The New Testament also condemns the practices of witchcraft and sorcery and warned that those who practice them will not enter the kingdom of God. Rev 22:14 – Blessed are those who do His commandments, that they may have the right to the tree of life, and may enter through the gates into the city. But outside are dogs and sorcerers and sexually immoral and murderers and idolaters, and whoever loves and practices a lie.
Rev 21:8 -But the cowardly, unbelieving, abominable, murderers, sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death.
However, there are no records in the New Testament where those guilty of were dealt with using the Old Testament laws of Lev 20:27 or Ex 22:18 even though they existed during the time of Jesus Christ and during the time of the apostolic era.
They used the spiritual powers in them through the deliverance ministry by casting out demons. Instead of instructing his disciples to kill sorcerers, Jesus Christ told them to cast out the demons in them.
Mk 3:14 says “Then He appointed twelve, that they might be with Him and that He might send them out to preach,15 and to have authority to cast out demons:
Mk 16:17 – And these signs shall accompany them that believe: in my name shall they cast out demons;
Mt 10:8 – Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse the lepers, cast out demons: freely ye received, freely give.
The most important fact that we all should know is that spirits do not have flesh and blood; Eph 6:12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.
If they do not have flesh and blood, we cannot touch them, feel them or see them. That means we cannot kill them either. Torturing a person who is alleged to be practicing witchcraft and sorcery and killing him or her is not solving the problem. We are only killing the host (person) which is legally wrong and the spirit move on to live in another host (person).
It is like a person driving a car and the driver lost control and killed a bystander. The driver after realising that he killed a person left the car and fled the scene. The people became angry and smash the car and burned it. In actual fact it was not the car that kills the person but the careless driver killed the person. The driver who killed the person escaped and the car became the victim.
Likewise the demon spirit who cause the death escaped untouched (as spirits do not have flesh and blood) while the car (host/person) became the victim. People are murdering, torturing or inflicting pain on an innocent person.
The laws of the country protect the lives of the accused and victims from harm but there is no laws dealing with the spirits. Therefore, the only way to address this issue is to cast out the demons operating in the person. The demon spirits will vacate the host and God will replace it with a clean spirit as He had promised.
Eze 36:26 -I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; I will take the heart of stone out of your flesh and give you a heart of flesh.
Ps 51:10 -Create in me a clean heart, O God; And renew a right spirit within me.
Lk 10:19 – Behold, I give you the authority to trample on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall by any means hurt you.
Jer 1:10 – See, I have this day set you over the nations and over the kingdoms, to root out and to pull down, to destroy and to throw down, to build and to plant.
For these reasons, sorcery related cases must be left to the church (various Christian denominations) to handle as it was given the power to address such spiritual matters.

  • The third and final part of this article discusses the church’s critical role in the fight against sorcery related problems in the country.

One thought on “Using demonic powers to kill

  • As a spiritual healer for over 30 years, I have broken many witchcraft spells. It is sad how much people suffer from black magic and that there is so much evil in this world that someone would actually forcefully control someone else. My clients and all people who suffer from black magic many times live a life of torture until it is broken. God is watching and one day people who hire and do black magic will have to answer for what they did.
