SO far, I have discussed two skills that we use to gain knowledge – reading and listening.
I have talked about the sources that we can get information from – books, newspapers, magazines, radio and listening to good audio tapes or CDs.
These days, there is technology that makes information accessible almost everywhere as long as people are in a network coverage area.
Yes, I am talking about the mobile phone and internet.
In the past few years, communication has become very convenient since the introduction of mobile phones.
Now you can talk with people almost anywhere and anytime.
You can use your phone to learn. I read in The National on Monday that Afghan women are learning to read and write using software placed in mobile phones.
I have nieces and nephews from the other side of the city or country asking me to help them with homework questions.
However, you should know that with any new technology introduced anywhere, problems could arise if the devices are not used in the right way.
Take the mobile phone, for example.
In some communities, it has been reported that when mobile phones were first introduced, they brought a strain to relationships – as in marriages.
Last year, Dr Amanda Watson, a university lecturer and researcher, said although villagers she was studying in Madang used the mobile phone to keep in touch with relatives they “saw mobiles as the cause of marriage breakdowns”.
“We were hearing about someone seeing their partner engage in a conversation using a mobile, either talking quietly or text messaging, and this was causing jealousy and tension within the marriage,” Watson said.
There are people with bad motives out there and you must be careful not to get yourself involved with such persons.
Do not get into a conversation with people who use the phone to do such. You will only waste your time and money. (Remember phone credits cost money.)
If you are trapped in such cases, get help.
Some time ago a PNG male lawyer was summoned to appear in court because he texted his wife (whom he was separated from) some bad words.
Yes, there are some people out there who do not have manners.
Today, if you are using a social network such as Facebook, you will notice some of your relatives and friends who tend to do the same thing. Some do not have any manners.
