Utilise army engineers: Saonu

GOVERNOR Ginson Saonu was uncertain why Morobe politicians did not utilise the services of the PNG Defence Force engineering battalion for civic activities despite their presence in Lae for 22 years.
Saonu said for some unknown reason, Morobe MPs were unable to engage the skills and knowledge of army engineers.
“Morobe has dire needs to build and refurbish many roads, bridges, schools, aid-posts and water supplies among other jobs to unlock economic corridors in rural areas and our nearby provinces,” he said.
“Regrettably, MPs from other provinces were utilising the engineering battalion. I do not believe that this is fair to Morobe people.
“I will make it my duty to discuss with nine Morobe MPs to start engaging army engineers to construct infrastructures linking remote areas in province.”
Saonu said engaging PNGDF engineers would unlock rural economic corridors to pave the way for the silent majority to have access to markets and improve livelihoods.
He was guest of honour to review the 42nd anniversary parade of the engineering battalion on Sept 1 at Igam Barracks.
The engineering battalion was formed on Sept 1, 1976 in the swamps of Amanab in Green River, West Sepik.
