Vai claims top 50 world ranking
The National, Thursday March 27th, 2014
PNG top female squash player, Lynette Vai, has become the youngest player to be named in the World Junior Squash rankings.
The 15-year old, Malaysia-based squash player is ranked 50 in the world, five steps ahead beating former PNG champion Naluge Guy. Guy was ranked 55 in her playing days and before she retired from active participation.
PNG Squash Development Manager John Kambuou broke the news of the youngster’s achievement yesterday when outlining his plan for the sport for the 2014 season.
Accompanied by president of Squash Federation PNG, Edmond Pereira, Mr Kambuou said Vai’s ranking at the world stage at such early age shows promising signs for squash in general.
Vai’s success was attributed towards the PNG government funding to help elite athlete players playing overseas and gaining good competition as part of their preparation towards the Commonwealth Games and the 2015 Pacific Games.
Kambuou said Vai won the PNG and Victorian Open championships this year before flying to the Nicole David Squash Academy in Penang, Malaysia.
Vai will be joined by Robin Morove for the Australian Open championships in Melbourne, Australia during the Easter break.
After the Australian Open championship, Vai will join her PNG team mates for the Commonwealth Games, and later will move to Namibia, Africa.
Kambuou said PNG’s top seed, Madako Suari Junior will be moving to Malaysia to compete in the three tournaments on the Malaysian circuit stretching for three months.
