 PAPUA New Guinea’s flag bearer to the Commonwealth Youth Games, Lynette Vai, started her tour well with a win in her first day of competition yesterday.

Vai won 11-6,11-2,11-5 against Samoa and her second match will be at 8pm tonight (local time).

In other results yesterday, Miriam Peni finished sixth in the finals with a season’s best time of 12:38s. Beupu Noki lost his first match in boxing while Ryan Maskelyne logged a personal best (27:70s) in the 50m butterfly while Savannah Tkatchenko stopped the clock at 1:12.48. In tennis, Matthew Stubbings beat his Fijian rival and Violet Apisah was victorious over Barbados in their first singles round. Bea Ovia was unlucky in the women’s weightlifting by missing out on the bronze by just 0.01kg (bodyweight). Douglas Mea participated in the men’s weightlifting yesterday.
