Vai, Suari win tennis, squash opens
Favourite and Pacific Games squash gold medallist Lynette Vai won the women’s singles squash top honours, while Games silver medallist Madako Suari Jr took out the men’s title during the Port Moresby tennis and squash open final on Sunday.
The Port Moresby Racquets Club played host to the event from June 3 to 5, with tennis and squash combining to host their opens. After his win, Suari told the gathered club members and spectators: “Firstly, I would like to thank our sponsors, and the outside players, especially those from Lae and Madang, for coming and competing in this tournament.”
PNG tennis coach Kwalum Apisah thanked all those who made the open championships possible.
“It’s the first time that we have hosted the tennis and squash opens as a combined event.
“Given their wins and outstanding performances at last year’s Games, Vai and Suari have promising careers ahead of them. Thanks to all who took part and supported.”
“We are so proud to see many young players, who we taught as children, now grown up and playing against us,” Apisah said
Club president Tim Kriebisch thanked sponsors, club members and players who took part in making the event successful.
Apisah and Kriebisch hoped that the staging of the combined open would be the catalyst for better things for the codes in PNG.
