PARTY platforms are crucial in attracting credible candidates for the general election, but cannot win election for them, PNG Party Lae chapter coordinator Khay Takisieng said.
“Becoming a leader is determined by one’s moral and ethical conduct, the values within a person and not party policies,” he said.
He said political parties were just clubs that candidates joined where they were allocated numbers to wear and run in the political race.
“If a person wins, then a person is guided and protected under the party policy to educate and provide moral support and to address his intentions and electorate development plans.
“Candidates need to properly assess and scrutinise their own merits, credibility and reputation as that can determine a win and not the party policy.
“Voters need to scrutinise the leadership quality of the candidates in the districts.
“If they have the resources and knowledge but do not demonstrate wisdom in political leadership, that’s not the kind of leadership the country deserves,” he said.
Former Markham MP Andrew Baing who is after the governorship said parliament “is full of cowboys who hijacked the Constitution to disintegrate this country without respect for the founding fathers”.
Baing condemned yoyo politicians who jumped from party to party.
He said MPs should show “true leadership, wisdom and will-power”.
