NOANI Vare started the Twenty20 Bash cricket tournament on a high note after scoring 70 runs not-out to help Lewas Legends beat Cricket Papua New Guinea Board 11 by 110 runs at Port Moresby’s Amini Park on Wednesday.
Board won the toss and sent the Legends into bat with Vare, Tanya Ruma (18) and Brenda Tau (13) helping them to a 3/133 total after 20 overs.
Board’s chase did not keep up with the pace set by Legends with Board all out for just 23 runs.
Legends’ Vicky Ara’a led the bowling with four wickets while her teammates Mairi Tom and Kila Frank scooped doubles.
The first match on Wednesday saw the Legends dominate again with a seven-wicket victory over Board.
The Legends won the toss and sent Board into bat with the latter all out for 70 runs by the 17th over.
The Legends chased down their target in 17 overs with Vare (19) leading the chase again alongside teammate Baia John (18) to see them finish at 3/73 and win by seven wickets.
National coach Carl Sandri was not overly disappointed with the results with players re-adjusting after long lay-off from competitive cricket.
“The girls just played their first competitive cricket games for an extended period,” he said.
“As we saw with the Barramundis (national men’s team) in the Isuzu Cup, it takes time for the body and mind to adjust to playing again.”
