Vehicle boom a good sign
The National, Tuesday 27th March 2012
I REFER to comments that there are too many cars on Port Moresby’s roads.
This is an indication of an economic boom in PNG.
It shows that people can afford vehicles. And in the city, owning one is a need rather than a luxury.
These are good signs and the NCDC should look at improving road networks, extend and build new suburban centres with sufficient infrastructures and services for people to spread out rather than over-populating existing areas.
Governor Powes Parkop’s plans to expand and upgrade road networks should have been implemented sooner.
Let us not be narrow-minded and blame used-car dealers as new vehicle dealers like Ela Motors, Niuford and Boroko Motors are selling their cars like hot cakes, simply to satisfy a demand in the market.
If there are too many buses or taxis on the roads, do not blame the operators.
The informal sector which they come under, especially in Port Moresby is thriving on the back of the LNG and mining boom.
All this is contributing to the development and prosperity of our country.
Wealth is generated and spread, employment is created, and consumption of goods and services are up.
So, look at it positively.
Happy citizen driver
