VEHICLES transporting betel nuts from Madang to the Highlands have been overloading recently and warned by police but continue doing it, Madang police commander Supt Mazuc Rubiang says.
He said police tried warning and even arrested and charged drivers for overloading but they were still doing it.
“I am now warning the betel nuts transporters and other PMV drivers who are overloading to be cautious with the lives of the passengers on board,” Supt Rubiang said.
“Many lives had been lost when drivers did not obey simple traffic rules.”
He said on Tuesday afternoon, a truck loaded with betel nuts went off the road near the Madang government offices but luckily no one was hurt.
Supt Rubian said police told the driver to carry the required load the vehicle was supposed to carry.
He said for vehicles that were unregistered, uninsured and not roadworthy, the owners and drivers should get the papers fixed before the vehicle was on the road again.
Supt Rubiang said the safety of passengers travelling on the vehicle was important.
