POLICE yesterday restored order as vendors rushed to register their spots at the new Gordon Market in time for its opening today.
Gordon police station commander Inspector Mark Mosinakave said the National Capital District Commission had advised vendors to register themselves a few weeks ago.
Only a few did. The rest turned up yesterday causing a scene as they all wanted to be registered before the close of business.
“The situation is under control and police are monitoring the public,” Mosinakave said.
Meanwhile the K30 million market facility will follow the plan and system the NCDC had been working on with the UN Women, vendors and other stakeholders, according to Governor Powes Parkop.
He said they were ensuring that a high standard of security was provided and maintained.
“The Pacific Corporate Security is a proven firm that has a full back-up, vehicles, manpower, tactical unit and crowd control capacity. They will be providing security for the market,” he said. “We also have a full time manager and about 20 staff. We also have CCTV in place.”
He made this statement after concerns were raised over the security at the market.
On Sept 29, 2012, a woman shopping at the old Gordon Market was gang-raped in broad daylight in front of vendors.
On Nov 13, 2014, a police officer was stabbed at the market and died five hours later.
On Sept 29, 2016, a man from Rigo was killed at the market area.
Parkop said the incidents were the reasons city authorities had taken time to redesign and reconstruct the market.
