Vendors in East Boroko are now using in the newly-built K2 million Kipo Market, despite it not being opened.
“We haven’t had the official market opening yet, but we were allowed to do our selling for time being since the building has already been completed,” vendor Mary Michael told The National.
Michael said she and other vendors were told to move into the new market last Monday.
“No one has notified us on the market’s official opening, but we are happy that we are now sheltered from the sun and rain,” she said.
Michael said another good thing was that goods that were sold during the day could be kept overnight and were watched over by security guards.
Morris Vaira, a regular customer, said the market provided a safe zone for both buyers and sellers.
He thanked Moresby-South MP Justin Tkatchenko and National Capital District Governor Power Parkop for the initiative.
However, Vaira suggested a few changes to the market.
“The main gate is in front of the roundabout, which is dangerous for those making their way through that gate. There are also the steep steps, which is a disadvantage for older folk who have knee problem and find it difficult to climb up.”
Fresh fruits, vegetables and cooked food are all sold in the market.
Space has already been allocated for betel nuts sellers who will be moving in soon.
