A MAGISTRATE in East Sepik has retired after 37 years of service.
Christine Kowor Anawe, 65, from Magopin village, ESP, started her public service career in 1967 with what used to be called the Information and Extension Services in Wewak.
She then worked for the National Broadcasting Corporation’s Radio Wewak as a broadcaster until she joined the magistracy as a trainee magistrate in January, 1975.
Anawe was the third national female magistrate at the time she joined and was the first ever woman magistrate from her province.
Magistrate David Susame said Anawe was leaving at a time when positive changes and developments were taking place to elevate the magistracy to another level in line with the government’s white paper policy on the law and justice sector.
He said the lower judiciary level had seen significant and progressive changes as an institution in terms of service delivery and Anawe had been part of those changes.
One such development was the Magistrate’s Pension Act which was now before parliament.
It was an emotion ceremony for many, including Susame, who has worked with Anawe.
Boram Correctional Service commanding officer Aaron Menau bemoaned the fact the many quality employees were retiring from public service.
