ATHLETES have certain reasons why in the peak of their career, they suddenly disappear from the spotlight — but for Judas Kavoi, a member and veteran in Papua New Guinea bowls, he has spent the last four decades in the sport he loves.
Kavoi, pictured, from Baimuru, Gulf, has been bowling since 1973 and at the age of 64, he is not about to retire.
“I love the sport, it is a way of keeping myself fit and occupied,” Kavoi said.
Despite his many years of playing, Kavoi has not represented the country at any international tournament. “The reason is because I do not play in the competitive sense of it,” he said.
“It is a hobby for me which I enjoy playing any odd day.”
Kavoi was a former rugby league player in the DCA Hawks in the early 70s and late 80s.
He left the physical contact sport to join the psychological warfare in bowling, which has taken him to parts of the country such as Rabaul, Lae, Bulolo, Goroka and Mt Hagen, playing in his favoured position as skip for the men’s team events.
“This year I seek to challenge myself and take the highest honour in representing my country.
“My family has been very supportive of me and I see no reason why I can’t compete when the challenge is brought right to my doorstep.”
The resident of Tokarara in NCD is training very hard three days a week and says he will get the gold without a doubt.
“Of that, I am confident that I have a chance,” he said.
