Victim’s brother appeals for compo

A TAXI driver who was accused of causing the death of two of his female passengers during heavy rain and flooding in Port Moresby last year has been urged to pay the balance of a compensation payment for one of the victims.

The victim’s brother Winnie James told The National yesterday that their people of Enga also appealed to the man’s relatives and community leaders to resolve the matter under police supervision. 

He said man the was a member of the Kombka community from Dei in Western Highlands living in Port Moresby.

“A letter has been served to the community leaders for mediation for two consecutive Saturdays starting on 29th June but has not been adhered to and we don’t want things getting out of hand” James said.

“I appeal to James Kunduka to keep to his word to pay compensation.

“Kunduka said he would pay compensation to the deceased’s family after he made a bel kol payment of K20,000 but has not done so.”

James said the accident allegedly happened on March 12, 2012 during heavy rain at North Waigani at the back of the Boreaboa Primary School on the way to Tokam barracks. The taxi fell into a flooded storm drain and claimed the lives of two women from Enga while the third Engan woman and the driver escaped.
