Victim’s relatives question why police released suspect

RELATIVES of a young man who allegedly died at the hands of drunkards are questioning why police let the suspects go.
Relatives of Johannes Koroi, 28, from Tamagone village on Bali Island, West New Britain, claimed four youths of Sepik-origin were released by police despite overwhelming evidence that they killed Koroi on Feb 28 at portion 1016, section 3, at Mamota Oil Palm Block, on the Kimbe-Bialla Highway.
A police report said Koroi was killed after he failed to repay K30 for a live chicken he took on credit from one of the suspects. 
Andrew Takae, the deceased’s nephew claimed that the arresting officer did not give any reasons for the release of the suspects when asked.
“This is a murder case and suspects would not normally be released by police or be granted police bail,” Takae said.
Koroi’s family alleged the officer had been seen on numerous occasions socialising with the suspect and his
relatives.
Takae said that had angered the relatives who were thinking of pay-back if the suspects were not held in custody.
He said two meetings for the suspect and his relatives with the family of the deceased witnessed by police had failed to reach a resolution.
Takae said they are calling on Police Minister Nixon Duban and provincial police commander Samson Siguyaru to reprimand the arresting officer.
