SWIRE Shipping Vikings settled for a 6-6 draw with Avis Cruisers to retain the first place in the Port Moresby Women’s Softball Association corporate competition.
It was the battle for the top spot with both teams on 12 points each after round eight at the Bisini Diamonds.
Percentage difference in last weekend’s results sees Vikings maintain their position with Cruisers trailing in second.
The pool-A contest between Vikings and Cruisers ignited the Bisini Diamonds atmosphere with excitement as both teams tussled for momentum.
Vikings were serious in their batting and led by three after two innings.
Cruisers trailed but their solid fielding paid off in the third inning as levelled the scores at three points apiece.
Cruisers captain Gethrude Simba said they were not prepared for the crucial match, but kept Vikings at bay with their defence.
After the final innings, the scores were tied at 6-6 despite Vikings having the last play of the game.
“We were looking forward to this game, but came half-prepared,” Simba said.
“Most of our players didn’t show up.
“We wanted the win and Vikings were also up for it.
“But it was a good performance by both teams to settle for a draw.”
Meanwhile, Vikings captain Rusiat Nugur said Cruisers’ defence was solid.
He said they would need to improve in the remaining four games.
“Cruisers gave us a good challenge with their defence,” Nugur said.
“Our infield and batting were poor.
“But a draw is better than losing,” she said after the draw.
