Village court clerk not happy with statement

National

THE recent announcement for all village court officials, except magistrates, to stand down and be replaced by grade 12 school leavers is a slap in the face for long-serving hardworking officers, Anglimp local level government Wurup 1 village court clerk John Was says.
“We were paid K17 quarterly allowance in the 80s and 90s, then it increased to K60 and today, we are receiving monthly allowances,” he said.
“We struggled with K17 to feed our families but still made our way up.
“We should not be kicked out because we have been faithfully working hard to maintain peace in villages for so many years.”
Was was responding to Attorney-General and Justice secretary Dr Eric Kwa’s announcement for the cessation of all existing peace officers and court clerks in villages nationwide.
The change is to replace existing village court officials with Grade 12 school leavers who did not have a chance for further studies.

  • Except for a few, what do these grade 12 dropouts know about conflict management and resolution and other village court related duties? I know they can be trained but knowledge only tends to puff up and from the trend that we are seeing with the emergence of the current boombox and Facebook generation and the values they embody and/or emulate, conflict management and resolution would be a far cry. Moreover, the government can’t just push this down just because they (grade 12 dropouts) don’t have further educational opportunities. Get them involved in other beneficial activities and let men and women who have proven themselves in these areas to continue or upcoming leaders be appointed and trained.
