THE Tubuseria village in Central launched its initiative, the Central Village Environmental Services, last Saturday to address rubbish problems in Motuan villages.

Don Wotton, project manager of CVES, said: “We purposely established this community-based NGO to implement a waste management and resource recovery programme for the all the rural Motuan villages.

“Port Moresby is growing and the business activities are increasing with lots of people coming into the city.

“The population has increased, resulting in an increase in the quantity of waste material generated in the city, and the need to properly manage the waste is a great concern at the moment.”

He said most of the waste ended up in the coastline and sea, which was harmful to the fishery resource and other marine lives that Motuans depended on for survival.

“It’s a litter problem and it’s a health issue for the Motuan people which needs to be addressing,”  he said.

“We will work with community groups, including youths and women’s groups, churches and volunteers to address the problem of littering, indiscriminate dumping of rubbish and pollution of the marine and village environment, and encourage sanitary waste disposal practices.

“We will start with Tubuseria and will implement it throughout all the Motuan villages.”

Central deputy provincial administrator Edward Kila commended the community and assured them of government support.

“We always talk about big infrastructures and developments and all these big things and forget about smaller things that is very important in our everyday lives. Taking good care of waste is important to provide a conducive environment.”
