Villagers raise fund to help flood victims

THE villagers of Wara Mombol at Banz town, Jiwaka, are raising funds to help their relatives affected by a recent flood.
The freak flood in the North Waghi district claimed three lives. It struck at around 3am on March 24 following heavy rain.
The Kaunang River washed away the bridge connecting North Waghi to Jimi district, feeding debris into the swollen Mombol River.
Dead are a man, a mother and her child.
The flood washed away livestock, 300 homes, a vehicle, food and coffee gardens.
The committee is working with the Jiwaka Provincial Disaster Relief Committee. It has also appealed to the Government, donor agencies, businesses and individuals to assist those affected by the flood.
The Port Moresby-based Wara Mombol flood relief committee is raising funds for the people affected.
A fundraising drive will be held tomorrow at Jack Pidik Park from noon to 5pm.
Provincial Disaster Coordinator John Kupul said the flood was the biggest and the worst to hit North Waghi.
Jiwaka provincial civil engineer Thomas Max earlier said two bridges in Jimi and one in North Waghi were washed away on March 8 and 24 and would cost more than K10 million to replace.
