FIFTY people were baptised to be members of the United church in Hela last month.
They included village chiefs Mbuta Lapiago, Thomas Marape and Paul Pora who joined 47 others in the baptism ceremony at the Paijapaija United church in Hides, Hela. Bishop Rev Steven Bai said the three village chiefs had been instrumental in promoting peace in the mining area and promoted the importance of being a Christian.
“We are happy that some of the people involved in illegal activities have changed their lives,” he said.
“People should not live the same life. If they see that they are facing problems in the lives, they need to make some resolutions and get involved in church activities. With God, we can lead a meaningful life.”
Bai said despite the Coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic, economic crisis and law and order issues, the 50 people gave their lives to God.
Rev Nelson Kaloma said it was the biggest number of people baptised on a day.
He said communities would be peaceful if people involved themselves in church activities.
