STUDENTS at the University of Goroka (UOG) damaged school properties, including vehicles and buildings, last night.

The violence is believed to have stemmed from various administrative fees charged by the institution on the student body.

Vice-Chancellor Dr Gairo Onagi’s residence was surrounded by a mob of angry students at about 11pm.

The group of male students shouted abuse and threw various objects in the vicinity of the vice-chancellor’s home.

Security personnel were out-numbered.

But before the situation could escalate, a power outage in the North Goroka section of the Eastern Highlands provincial capital plunged the entire campus into darkness, causing the mob to disperse before midnight.

Members of the administration headed by Onagi are expected to meet with student representatives today to resolve the matter.

Problems between the students and administration have been a regular occurrence in the university’s recent history.
