Extra-time field goal separates Digicel Cup teams in Hope Cup

By PARKER TAMBUA
MATTHEW Wawe kicked an extra-time field goal to help the visiting Port Moresby Vipers edge the Mendi Muruk 11-10 in the inaugural Hope Cup at the Joe Keviame Oval on Sunday.
The Digicel Cup sides looked to set the tone for an intense encounter but it was the home side who got off to dream start when Junior Milar scored an unconverted try on the left edge 10 minutes in.
The Vipers responded through winger Rex Tandoa after a one-on-one strip by Karis Peter on Muruks forward Akua Angeles 10m out from the home side’s tryline saw the National Capital District Commission-backed side take a 10-6 lead into half-time.
The second half saw both sides step up their physicality with Muruks forwards Noris Philemon and Nathan Andape giving their home fans something to cheer about through their strong carries.
The Muruks’ inroads up the middle set the stage for Jeffrey Rombo to score off an inside pass from hooker Aleto Sesemena to square the game at 10-10.
Former SP Hunters playmaker Ate Bina Wabo, Manu Kame and Vipers skipper Ade Kawa threw everything at the Petroleum Resources Kutubu-backed Muruks in the last 15 minutes but home side held on.
With both sides locked at 10-10 at the end of regulation time, match officials gave five minutes each way.
But the Vipers had to wait until the final minute of the second half of extra time to claim victory.
Vipers captain Ade Kawa said he was honoured to be part of history being part of a significant event aimed at promoting peace in Southern Highlands.
“It was a great win,” he said.
“We will build on that as we continue our preparations next season in the Digicel Cup.
“But most importantly, it is a great privilege for the team to contribute to something significant in Southern Highlands, which is hope for peace.”
The Hope Cup was initiated by NCD Governor Powes Parkop.
