PORT Moresby Vipers returned to pre-season training last week with the Moni Plus-sponsored Digicel Cup franchise putting more focus on getting the basics right, according to an official.
Coach Joe Sipa said they were upbeat about a stronger campaign next year after they bowed out in week one of the finals last season, courtesy of a defeat by Hela Wigmen.
“Our first two weeks of pre-season preparations are all about mobility and flexibility,” he said.
“We are going back to the basics, practising how to grip the ball and pass it to our targets.
“For the next four weeks, we will to go on low loads and get the basics right before we go into the main pre-season training.
“Taking the boys back to the basics is the whole idea of our early preparations before we look at other areas.”
The Vipers endured a tough season this year with the removal of head coach Leonard Tarum and the inclusion of Sipa, who restored some consistency to the side.
Sipa said he was excited to lead the Vipers again next season.
“Pre-season training is important,” he said.
“I expect self-discipline, commitment and dedication from the players.
“The basics are what we will be working on for now. From there, we will work on our weaknesses as we aim for stronger campaign next year.”
The Vipers are into their second week of pre-season training.
“Mobility and flexibility are crucial because we want to avoid injuries,” Sipa said.
“So far, my players are doing well.
“But I’m looking forward to more improvement as we continue our preparations.”
