TO mark the Australian Week celebrations last week, PNG National Rugby League Bid development manager Shane Morris was asked by the Australian High Commission to assist them in promoting the sports relationship between the two countries.
Morris, who is also the Stop N Shop Port Moresby Vipers head coach, was able to pick three of his players to speak about the importance of education to many of the students in National Capital District schools. They donated PNG NRL Bid rugby league balls, carry bags, training markers, exercise books, rugby league manuals and stickers to coincide with the celebrations.
Vipers’ trio of Larsen Marabe, Joshaia Abavu and Richard Kambo spoke about their career in education and sport that helped change their lifestyles.
Abavu spoke about his passion to fly an aeroplane.
He is currently studying to achieve his dream of becoming a pilot.
Marabe told students about playing rugby league in Australia and England. He spoke about how going to school had given him the opportunity to secure employment with AES as a health and safety officer.
Kambo said it was his objective to continue playing for the Kumuls in the World Cup next year. He is also preparing himself for life after rugby league.
Kambo is also employed by AES as an office and projects co-coordinator.
Morris spoke about his personal experience as a young person leading up to his current status.
“To be the best, you can continue to learn and develop your knowledge and skills. Surround yourself with good people and from this you will be on a working career and have good personal life,” he said.
It was indeed a good initiative and gave the students the opportunity to meet their heroes but importantly take their education as equally important as sports.
