Volcanic activities on Manam cools

VOLCANIC activities on Manam Island ended on Wednesday, according to the Rabaul Volcanological Observatory.
It reported that it was possible for renewed eruptions to occur based on the longevity of the current episode of eruptions since August last year. The eruption was from the main crater which reached a peak at 7pm on Wednesday and then started to decline.
It was all over between 9pm and 10pm, the observatory said. The summit area was covered by atmospheric clouds at about the same time, making it difficult to observe night glow and audible noises also eased at around the time.
The Rabaul Volcano Observatory will continue to monitor the volcano as it was reported to be on stage two of the risk level.
The probability for mudflow generation from ash and scoria (lava ejected as fragments from the volcano) deposited on the upper flanks of the volcano from the eruption since August, 2018 during heavy rain still remains high so people should remain alert during these times, the observatory said.
Manam Restoration Authority chairman Ken Fairweather said the authority could provide some money to help those in need of evacuation.
