A new volleyball competition, launched on Friday at Mumut Street in Morata in Port Moresby, will run through to next year.
The Haus Mahn Cup will host youths from Morata, Gerehu and Rainbow.
During the launching, sponsor Joe Tonde said he wanted youths establish a friendly network among themselves.
Tonde said he was sponsoring the competition to allow youths to participate in something worthwhile.
“We will unite youths and fight law and order issues in the community,” Tonde said.
“I was thinking of sponsoring other sports but since volleyball is played by everyone in the country, I decided to sponsor the sport.”
Tonde believes communities will change when people’s attitude improves.
“When the youths are involved, they can organised church groups to do awareness on Christian values in those sporting venues,” he said.
He said the competition would last for several months before heading into the finals.
He assured the youths that the competition would be run transparently.
Mumut Street community leader Oti Soka thanked Tonde for supporting the youths of Morata through sport.
He assured Tonde that his committee executives were united and they would make sure to take the competition to next level.
“By doing this, we are making way for Morata to be safest place and suburb in the city for the people to live in,” Soka said.
