Volleyball president explains approach

PAPUA New Guinea Volleyball Federation executives headed by president Kila Dick have brushed aside criticism of their officials for Team PNG Amoa for the Pacific Games.
Dick said his federation was aiming for medals, preferably gold, at the Games in Apia, Samoa, after both the men and women sides missed the medal playoffs at the 2015 Games in Port Moresby.
He said it was important to have the presence of a PNGVF executive in the teams in order to better manage them and maximise their potential.
“We are setting our objective and preparations differently from past experiences and build on that to be on par with the other nations and to progress from there,” Dick said.
“It’s simple. We need to be better organised and more professional on the court and we have to get ourselves organised in our management and have experienced personnel.”
Dick stressed that he and his deputy Kila Oli would not be part of the management team.
He outlined the reasons why the PNGVF executive would be represented in the management/coaching of the teams:

  • Accountability — better external (PNGVF) and internal (coaches/players) evaluation of the teams before competition and after;
  • Honest information – honest reporting in areas that require urgent attention given players performance or coaches performances from the previous management to give new PNGVF a clearer picture of the team’s capabilities (including individual player reports) and areas to improve;
  • Ability to change — for the team to have room to change its approach and adopt methods and plans in order to optimise performance; and
  • Learning from 2015 experience — PNG volleyball teams missed out on medal playoffs at the 2015 Pacific and the PNGVF has set the goal of winning medals in Apia by not repeating the same mistakes and errors in judgement that affected the team’s chances.

“These are the reasons why we have three executive members in the PNG Amoa volleyball because we want to have new ideas in all aspects and my executives can contribute positively to our men’s and women’s teams for the Pacific Games,” Dick said.
