COMPETITION for spots in the final PNG volleyball teams for July’s Pacific Games is intensifying at squad training.
The country’s best players are building up form and fitness at the Taurama Aquatic Centre’s high performance facility alongside other codes like basketball and touch football. Volleyball and basketball squads are using the facility as they work towards their final teams for the Apia Games.
Volleyball has stated its aim to win medals at the Games with PNG Volleyball Federation president Kila Dick instituting management changes to the national teams.
“We have to take responsibility of player welfare so we win medals,” Dick said.
“We need to have the best prepared team mentally and physically to win medals and that is our main goal.
“We have to look after the players as they’re the ones who are competing for the country.”
Kila said his executive, with the blessing from the PNG Olympic Committee, had installed some of its board members to manage the squads.
“This we believe will see that management and athletes know what is required from them to produce the results.
“We know every player wants to make the final cut for the Pacific Games and that’s why they have to go through this training to get the best and most deserving players.
“Our training camps over the next few months will be tough and from that we’ll pick the final Games teams,” he said.
Dick said he wanted to institute a better system for preparing and choosing players to for the national teams.
