PACIFIC Games volunteer Paul Dua spent 12 hours last Saturday helping to direct people during the Pacific Games opening ceremony.

He started his shift at 11am and went home around 11pm – all because he wanted to contribute something to helping the country stage the best Games ever.

For seven hours, with a hailer in his hand, Dua made sure all traditional singsing groups and school children taking part in the opening ceremony moved in an orderly manner into the stadium.

Dua, from Kerowagi in Chimbu, is a student at Papua New Guinea Institute of Education.

He was one of the hundreds of volunteers helping out during the opening ceremony.

He said he started work at 11am and finished at 11pm during the four days of rehearsals leading up to Saturday.

“I pay loyalty to my country as a volunteer and I performed this task by controlling 7000 people to get into the field. For four days, I controlled the men, women and children for rehearsals,” Dua said.

“This is the final day (Saturday) and I’m happy that I paid loyalty to my country.”

He said the role he was playing was a challenge at first but he pulled through.

“My duty is to control them. I manage them to move along together in their respective lines by regions and singsing groups.” Dua said with excitement.
